Learning Resources Online: Free Games About Money and Finance

It’s that time of the year again when the kids are going back to school. We’re still homeschooling the girls this year (Grade 10 and Grade 4). They seem to enjoy the set-up.

And of course, because I’m the parent-teacher, it’s my job to find resources to help them in their homeschool journey. Online worksheets, free games, and physical activities, too.

Just like the previous years, I’ll be augmenting their online lessons with worksheets from some of my trusted sites: LiveWorksheets.com, TeachersPayTeachers, and Twinkl.

And just recently, I found a new website that I could use as a resource especially for Math since it offers free games on money and finance. Interestingly, the Mortgage Calculator website has a section for ad-free games that can be enjoyed by children of all ages.

One of these is Cash Back, wherein the player should calculate and give the correct change to the customer before time runs out. This is a good practice for mental Math involving addition and subtraction.

Another game to practice quick computations on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is Supermarket Numbers. You need to click on the number tiles to get the goal on the left. This is a bit tricky since some tiles have symbols. As the levels progress and the goal gets bigger, you have to combine the correct tiles to get the right number. The time limit adds some pressure, too.

Besides Arithmetic, the site offers free games involving logic and coding. One of these is Code Panda in which you have to guide the panda to the bamboo shoots in the puzzle by dragging directional blocks and running the “code” that you made afterwards. This is actually cool and it teaches kids to do logic puzzles. The more the game progresses, the more challenging the stages become.

I had my kids test out these games and they got excited at first… then got rattled during the higher levels especially with Supermarket Numbers, LOL! But it’s a good practice for them in terms of mental Math. They also loved the visuals and how they were attractive. The overall design allows them to enjoy the games.

There are simulation games in this website as well. Actually, there are a lot of games worth checking out. For school-age kids, this is a good resource because it’s not just entertaining, it’s educational, too.

Will surely be adding this site to our online learning resources this school year. 👍
